“The Yellow River culture is the root and soul of Chinese civilization. In China’s profound history, most of the changes from prehistoric development to various dynasties have taken the Yellow River basin as a stage. China’s agricultural origins and ideological beliefs have also taken their forms in the Yellow River basin.” At the “2023 World Great Rivers Civilizations Forum” held in Zhengzhou, Henan Province during September 16-18, Wang Wei, a member of the CAS faculty and chairman of the Society for Chinese Archaeology, explained the importance of the Yellow River culture to China.

With the topic “Mutual learning among civilizations · Jointly building a shared future”, four sub-forums were also set up under this event in addition to the main forum: “Diversity, exchange and mutual learning of great river civilizations of the world”, “Chinese civilization and the transmission as well as promotion of the culture regarding the Yellow River”, “Dialogue between Chinese civilization and world civilizations” and “Eco-protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin”. The purpose of the forum is to fully promote the culture of the Yellow River, strengthen exchanges and mutual learning among different world civilizations.

“Compared to the civilizations of other major countries in the world, Chinese civilization has three distinctive features: continuity, inclusivity, and diversification.” Wang Wei said that the history of Chinese civilization for more than 5,000 years has a clear context of development, an enduring civilization tradition, and outstanding continuity. At the same time, it absorbed many foreign civilizations and presented a process of absorption and renewed innovation.

“Many ancient civilizations in different regions of the world have spawned catchments of large rivers, but not all of the great river basins have cradled civilizations.” Professor Christoph Evans, Fellow of British Academy, believes that the emergence of civilization in the Yellow River basin went hand in hand with the emergence and development of agriculture, which laid the foundation for the development of agriculture to promote conditions for settlement and population growth. Liu Haiwang, director of Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, fully agrees. He expressed that the origin of human civilization depends on the geographical environment, including the civilization of the Nile, the civilization of the Two Rivers, the Chinese civilization of the Yellow River and the Chinese civilization of the Yangtze River. “Agricultural civilization is the most fundamental feature of early Chinese civilization. ”

Wang Zhongjiang, executive director of Peking University’s Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies, said, “Chinese culture has been an expanding process from ancient times to modern times. The rise of studies for numerous scholars in the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period laid the foundation for the development of Chinese culture for thousands of years.”

In her speech, Herta Nagl-Docekal, professor of philosophy at the University of Vienna in Austria and a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, pointed out that cultural exchange between East and West focuses on the “search for similarities subject to differences”. An intensive exchange is not only about discovering differences, but also about finding common ground and finding our common concerns for the modern world as a whole.” She said that although there would be some differences between East and West, the important commonality between the two sides could not be ignored.

CIIE enhances China-Kazakhstan cooperation under BRI

China International Import Expo plays a significant role in facilitating cooperation between China and Kazakhstan in the wake of the Belt and Road Initiative, according to officials, experts and business representatives.

“Since its first edition, the CIIE has adhered to its positioning as an international public product, upheld the principles of open cooperation and mutual benefit, promoted high-quality collaboration in the BRI and consistently advocated for expanding opening-up,” Shi Huangjun, representative of the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), said in an address to the Global Conference on the 10th Anniversary of the BRI and the Golden Age of China-Central Asia Engagement event on Sept 7.

Kazakhstan, recipient of an original proposal from the BRI in 2013, was the first Central Asian country to participate in the initiative. The CIIE was launched in 2018, after the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. Since 2018, its businesses have participated in the CIIE for five consecutive sessions.

In 2022, Kazakhstan launched the Export Accelerator, a program for entrepreneurs of small and medium-sized businesses aimed at helping them prepare for the export of goods to foreign markets.

So far, the program has attracted over 1,000 enterprises, including 300 that have exported for the first time and secured their first export contracts, said Gulnar Shaimergenova, director of the China Studies Center in Kazakhstan. She added there is no doubt the CIIE will be a key platform for the implementation of the Export Accelerator program and play a crucial role in promoting global development.

The CIIE has fostered opportunities for businesses from countries and regions involved in the BRI while benefiting the welfare of local people. Over the past five years, the expo has seen an accumulated intended turnover of about $350 billion, with participation of businesses from 171 countries and regions.

As of now, nearly 1,000 businesses from countries and regions involved in the BRI, including Kazakhstan, have signed up for the sixth CIIE, which has a total exhibition area of 75,000 square meters — an increase of about 20 percent compared to the previous edition.

Egemberdieva Asel Yerikovna, deputy CEO of QazTrade, said Kazakhstani enterprises have participated in the CIIE for five consecutive sessions, and the cumulative “intention to deal” amount has reached $430 million.

For the upcoming sixth edition, QazTrade will support 25 businesses to participate and exhibit Kazakhstan’s featured agricultural products, such as camel milk and honey.

“These high-quality products are closely related to a vast number of farmers and herdsmen in Kazakhstan. The CIIE will help improve their well-being for a better life,” according to Yerikovna.

During the event at Nazarbayev University, the CIIE also held a symposium, attracting more than 40 businesses.

“We have operated our factory for 18 years, and this year will be our first time participating in the Import Expo,” said a manager of a dairy company in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, adding he hopes the company can leverage the platform of the CIIE to meet more channel partners and expand the influence of its dairy brand in the Chinese market.

The CIIE has helped to introduce more high-quality products from countries and regions involved in the BRI into the Chinese market, thus assisting the Chinese people in pursuing a better life.

A business forum on China International Import Expo (CIIE) was held in Kazakhstan on September 7.

Yu Xiantao, economic and commercial counsellor of Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan, attended the forum and expressed his willingness to further encourage Kazakhstan companies to participate in the CIIE and showcase their high-quality products.

Yu added that he is looking forward to seeing more Kazakhstan companies and agencies join the 6th CIIE, which will take place from November 5 to 10 in Shanghai.

Five years on, the CIIE has been a witness to closer China-Kazakhstan cooperation.

According to a representative of the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), which is the venue for the CIIE, Kazakhstan has always been a significant participant of the CIIE. Over the past five editions, hundreds of Kazakhstan enterprises participated in the Business Exhibition and occupied a combined exhibition area of 2,000 square meters.

President Tokayev of Kazakhstan even once described the CIIE as a “golden gate” for global commodities to enter the Chinese market.

Many Kazakh companies have achieved commercial success at the expo, with the intended turnover generated by these companies over the years totaling $430 million. Several of Kazakhstan’s renowned goods like candies and dairy products have also become well-known to Chinese consumers thanks to the CIIE.

Egemberdieva Asel Yerikovna, deputy CEO of QazTrade, said during the forum that Kazakhstan is upbeat about its economic and trade cooperation with China as bilateral trade between the two rose 34 percent year-on-year to $24.1 billion in 2022.

Speaking of QazTrade’s preparations for this year’s expo, Egemberdieva said that the organization will once again help more Kazakh enterprises enter the Chinese market and make their products known to the world.

During the forum, a CIIE delegation updated the audience about the preparations for this year’s event. According to the delegation, over 360,000 square meters of exhibition area has already been booked by more than 2,000 enterprises. The number of Fortune 500 companies and industry-leading enterprises taking part this year is also more than that of the last edition.

Notably, the physical Country Exhibition will make its return this year.

In addition, the World Openness Report 2023 will also be released at the 6th Hongqiao International Economic Forum, a key component of the CIIE.

TotalEnergies shareholders approve N8.5bn dividend payout for 2022 financial year

TotalEnergies shareholders approve N8.5bn dividend payout for 2022 financial year

By Yusuf Yunus

Shareholders of TotalEnergies Marketing Nigeria Plc have  approved N8.49 billion dividend payout for 2022 financial year that translated to N25 per ordinary share for shareholders.

The sharholders gave the approval at the company’s 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Thursday in Lagos, while approving all resolutions.

The shareholders of the company commended the Board and management for an impressive result.

The company, despite inflationary pressure, recorded  N141.12 billion or 41 per cent increase in 2022 turnover to close at N482.47 billion when compared with N341.35 billion recorded during the corresponding period of 2021.

However, Profit After Tax (PAT) decreased by four per cent from N16.86 billion to N16.11 billion due to rising costs.

They also congratulated Mrs Bunmi Popoola- Mordi, former Company Secretary of Totalenergies for being appointed as an Executive Director, which took effective from April 1.

Speaking at the AGM, the Chairman of the company, Mr Jean-Phillipe Torres, said in 2022 financial year, the environment was replete with incidents of insecurity, gunmen attacked and insurgency and banditry across the nation.

According to him, the development was a huge challenge in the country.

Torres said that the negative effect of inflation had been far-reaching, as the company saw prices rise exponentially across food, goods and services, while inflation surged dramatically month on month.

“By December, inflation had risen to 21.34 per cent year-on-year and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) had increased to 18.85 per cent year-on-year. The Naira continued on a downward spiral.

“The Russia Ukraine war which began in February 2022 had reaching implications well beyond security, the borders of the two countries and several continents.

“Nigeria was not exempted from the impact of the war as there were significant increases in wheat and energy prices in the country.

“The price of bread and some other wheat-related products increased by as much as 100 per cent. Coupled with supply chain challenges AGO opened the year at N350 per litre and close at N850.

“On the local aviation market, we saw air fares double in response to inflation and rising costs of aviation fuel,” he added.

He, however, reiterated the company’s ambition to become the responsible energy major and a world class player in sustainable energy, saying that “this what we will continue to focus our efforts”. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
