The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Dr Olukayode Egbetokun, said the Nigeria Police Force made remarkable achievements in 2024 in spite of challenges.

Egbetokun said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the opening of his end of year conference with strategic police managers, consisting of officers from the rank of commissioners of police and above.

“Reflecting on 2024, it is clear that both the Nigeria Police Force and the country at large faced a range of security challenges, but we also achieved notable successes.

“We dealt with a variety of internal threats, such as banditry, insurgency, kidnapping, and armed robbery, as well as external threats posed by groups like ISWAP and the Lakurawa terrorists in the North West.

“The country also confronted other critical issues, including cultism, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, terrorism financing, money laundering, and cybercrimes, especially among our youth.

“Protests and civil unrest added to the challenges,” he said.

The I-G said in spite of the difficulties, the Nigeria Police Force had shown remarkable resilience, collaborating with sister agencies to ensure law and order.

According to him, throughout 2024, we made substantial strides in enhancing the safety and security of Nigerians.

He said the force displayed remarkable dedication in combating criminal activities across urban and rural areas.

“Through revitalised crime prevention efforts, we have made significant progress in reducing crime, ensuring public safety and improving service delivery.

“These accomplishments reflect our firm commitment to holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.

“Our efforts have been comprehensive, leveraging modern technology, intelligence gathering, and community policing,” he said

Egbetokun said that the strategies had not only increased the operational efficiency of the force, but fostered stronger collaborations with local communities as well as building trust between the police and the public.

“While we acknowledge the complexity of the challenges, the Nigeria Police had remained steadfast in its resolve to continue to address the challenges head-on to secure the future of the country.

“Despite our best efforts to foster trust and confidence with the public and our strong emphasis on discipline and professionalism, a small number of our officers have unfortunately continued to engage in behavior that damages our reputation.

“This has been a significant challenge for us in 2024 and to make matters worse, we have also faced false publications aimed at tarnishing our organisation’s image.

“This not only undermines our credibility but also erodes the trust we have worked hard to build with the community,” he said.

He said the force would be committed to addressing the challenges head-on, exploring innovative solutions to promote transparency, accountability and excellence.

Egbetokun said the force had achieved major successes in tackling crime, leading to the arrest of 30,313 suspects for a range of serious offenses, including kidnapping, cultism, murder, rape, armed robbery, and unlawful possession of firearms.

According to him, we also recovered 1,984 assorted firearms, 23,250 rounds of ammunition, 1,438 stolen vehicles and rescued 1,581 kidnapped victims.

“In the fight against kidnapping, we intensified our efforts and achieved substantial success. A prime example is the rescue of one Nigerian and three Indian nationals on June 30 in Ogun.

“Despite being ambushed by gunfire, the victims were safely rescued, and two kidnappers were neutralised in a subsequent raid.

“We also recovered five AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and communication equipment. This operation demonstrates our capacity to combat kidnapping and criminal enterprises effectively,” he said. (NAN)

The  Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)  Malam Shehu Mohammed,  says it recorded low Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) in spite of high traffic volume at some critical corridors across the country.

Mohammed disclosed this while controlling traffic at the Asaba-Onitsha Niger Bridge corridor, alongside other senior officers on Tuesday in Asaba.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the monitoring is in line with the FRSC general agenda of the 2024 Operation Zero Tolerance Special Patrol Target.

The agenda aim to ensure free flow of traffic on all corridors as well as achieving a season without road traffic deaths or injuries.

The corps marshal attributed the nationwide low traffic crashes to the commission’s proactive measures, including increased patrols, traffic control, and public enlightenment campaigns.

He, however, reported a fatal accident on the Akure-Ibadan highway that claimed three lives, emphasising the need for motorists to exercise caution and avoid night journeys.

He maintained that visibility at night was bad and it was always difficult to render rescue operations, adding that night travels were dangerous and road crashes occured more at night due to low visibility.

“Right now, we are on the Niger bridge and the traffic is moving smoothly and that’s the essence of  increased visibility on the road this time around.

“The calls we are getting all over the federation is that our men are all over and they are getting it right because the traffic is moving, though some are going slowly.

“The activities are going smoothly on the road nationwide and we are happy that it is free and the traffic is moving smoothly,” he said.

Mohammed commended the FRSC personnel who were on late patrol at the corridor, assuring them that the management would continue to prioritise their welfare.

“So far, from the place we left, we saw traffic on Monday in Akure but they were moving smoothly and that means that the strategy we took to increase our men and patrol is yielding positive results.

“Honestly, I am impressed with our men, some of them are even on the road at night trying to see that there is a free flow of traffic and I want to commend you all,” he said.

The FRSC corps marshal, however, urged motorists to give maximum cooperation to the officers and men deployed for traffic control at all the corridors nationwide.

“We assure the motoring public that we are committed to this and we will continue to be here until Jan. 15, 2025.

“This is to make sure that every motorist or vehicle moving either from the North to the South or the South to the East, will be able to get to their destination when they want to get there without any hitch,” he said.

NAN reports that to ensure smooth vehicular movement at the Asaba inter change, the FRSC corps marshal, the State Sector Commanders of Anambra and Delta, Joyce Alexander and Fredrick Ogidan, controlled traffic for over three hours.

Azinge made the call in his palace while receiving the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohamed, during the ongoing nationwide end of the year special operations on Tuesday in Asaba, Delta state.

The royal father, however, congratulated Mohammed on his appointment as the 8th Corps Marshal adding that the history and the work of FRSC was not hidden to anyone.

Azinge said that gridlock always disrupted easy passages of vehicles, hereby, delaying motoring public for hours.

He pledged to mobilise the support of traditional rulers on advocacy campaign to enhance the operation of FRSC towards making the roads safer.

“The challenges are there especially at the Niger bridge but we applaud your organisation for the role you played trying to minimise to a very large extent such incidences.

“Our role is to lead advocacy just like you do, sure that is exactly what you will expect from us and also to lead advocacy as a people as the traditional institutions are closer to people and people are bound to listen more of such information coming from the throne.

“At a shortest notice, we will try to also lead advocacy along that line. We consider other institutions in Asaba as critical stakeholders in whatever we are doing.

“We try to forge linkages and try to push partnerships on what you mentioned and to that extent, we will never hesitate to forge such partnerships if invited to do so.

“This is necessary so that we can try to build up that linkage and try to carry everyone on board by working together for the benefit not just for our people but for the benefit of all Nigerians” he said.

Earlier, Mohammed commended the Asagba of Asaba Kingdom for his royal support on effective traffic control.

He said that the traditional rulers are crucial stakeholders in the quest to reduce road traffic crashes in Nigeria, emphasising their influence and moral authority in promoting road safety.

He said that traditional rulers possessed a unique platform to sensitise their subjects on the importance of road safety.

He appealed to the Asagba to use his influence to educate the subjects on the dangers of reckless driving, overloading, and other unsafe practices that contribute to road crashes.

The Federal Government has secured 742  convictions and acquitted 888 suspects, for want of evidence from terrorism trials between 2017 and 2024 in the country.

Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Babadoko, disclosed this in Abuja, at a news briefing on the Kanji trials and other terrorism-related issues on Monday.

The briefing was jointly addressed  the Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) , Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, the Director of Legal, ONSA, Zakari Mijinyawa and Babandoko.

The director of public prosecution of the federation explained that 1,722 cases were disposed  of in phases one to six of the terrorism trials in the country.

According to him, out of  the number, 742 were convicted, 888 acquitted, and 92 adjourned.

He said the terrorists received various sentences, ranging from life imprisonment and terms of 65 to 75 years, to the death penalty, depending on the severity of their crimes.

Babadoko stated that this achievement was in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and sector actors to ensure accountability for crimes committed by individuals.

“The Legal Aid Council, the Nigerian Police, the Correctional Service, and the Federal High Court came together to ensure the prosecution of suspects arrested either at the front lines in the Northeast, Southeast, or North Central.

“Between 2017 and the present, a number of suspects were prosecuted at Kanji.

“At the first phase of the trial, a total of 282 cases were disposed of, 50 of which resulted in convictions, 203 discharged for want of evidence, and 28 adjourned to Abuja for continuation of the trial in 2017,” he said.

According to him, in the second phase of the trial in 2018, a total of 804 suspects or cases were disposed of, out of which 203 were convicted and 582 discharged for lack of evidence.

“The other cases were adjourned to Abuja for continuation of trial.

“At the third phase of the trial, between 9th to 12th July 2018, a total of 224 cases were disposed of, out of which 113 were convicted, 97 discharged for lack of evidence, five acquitted, and nine cases adjourned for continuation of trial.

“At the fourth phase of the trial, in December 2023, a total of 25 cases were listed for trial, 14 were convicted.

“One was ordered to be sent to Operation Safe Corridor for Disarmament, Demobilisation, and Reintegration (DDR), and 10 cases were adjourned for continuation of trial,” he said.

Babadoko explained that in July 2024, a total of 253 cases were disposed of, out of which 125 were convicted, 85 were terrorism financing cases, and 22 involved International Criminal Court (ICC) criminalities.

“That is to say, there were crimes against humanity, and 22 cases were adjourned for trial.

“Now, at the sixth phase of the trial, two weeks ago, in December 2024, a total of 237 cases were disposed of, with about nine adjourned for continuation of trial.

“Some of these cases include acts of terrorism, terrorism financing, ICC criminalities, for which some of the defendants were sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from 60 to 75 years to life imprisonment.

“It is important to note that within the last year, the life of this administration, about 515 cases were disposed of.

“Over 800 who have served terms or were discharged and/or acquitted at the various stages of trial were moved to Operation Safe Corridor in Gombe for DDR in accordance with the orders of the court and the policy of the federal government”.

The NCTC director in his remarks noted that ”Nigeria is now more experienced in handling terrorism cases.”

Laka said that this development demonstrated the current administration’s commitment to human rights.

He noted that the current administration tried 550 suspects and secured 327 convictions in one year, while the previous administration handled 500 suspects over eight years.

“With the coming of this administration in one year, we have tried over 550.

“So, you can imagine by the end of this first term of this administration, we would have cleared maybe three or four times the number that was done in eight years of the last administration.

“So, I think Nigerians need to know how committed this administration is to human rights”.

Laka explained that at the initial stage, the country was learning the ropes in handling terrorism cases but had now grown more experienced in tackling extremism cases.

“We are partnering with some of our international partners, including UN agencies, on the training of troops in battlefield evidence collection.

“I think all Nigerians were novices when it comes to the issue of terrorism. Even our security and intelligence agencies were not as good as they are today.

“I think Nigeria has that experience now in the fight against terrorism,” he said. (NAN)

He said that the exercise was a yearly tradition, aimed at encouraging personnel and ensuring a safer motoring environment.

“This is a special time for yuletide where all personnel of FRSC are out. You can see that I am here with some of our personnel and the entire management is here.

“The idea is for us to monitor and supervise this year’s operations, to create a safe motoring environment for people, for commuters and travelers to have a safe mobility to their destination.

“This is done every year and the entire management is out to encourage our staff to make sure that our mandate of keeping the road safe for all is strictly adhered to.

Mohammed commended the motoring public for their cooperation and adherence to road safety guidelines, noting that the FRSC would continue to work tirelessly to ensure a safer motoring environment for all road users.

“From my observations, for now, the traffic is moving, drivers are obeying the rules, only in some few instances and that’s why we will continue to move and we will be stopping to check and cross check what they are doing.

“This is also a period where we can stop to sensitise them, do some public and education enlightenment on the road to make sure we achieved the theme for this year.

“We also want to tell the passengers to speak out when they see their driver is recklessly driving or doing the bad habit of driving.

“We are also appealing to them to talk to them so that we achieve the successes and reduce road traffic crashes this time around,” he said.

NAN also reports that the special monitoring provides an opportunity for the Corps Marshal to assess the performance of personnel during the Operation Zero tolerance to traffic crashes. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
