The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the European Union are partnering to host a three-day summit in Abuja to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to a clean hydrogen economy.
The Director-General of ECN, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, said the event, slated for June 23 to 25, will build crucial partnership between fifty federal agencies and the organised private sector.
Abdullahi noted that the initiative builds on groundwork executed by the commission since the inauguration of its dedicated Hydrogen Committee in 2023.
The D-G explained that the summit will position Nigeria to bypass old energy options by converting its vast natural gas and solar power into immediate investments.
He added that Nigeria is among nine countries selected globally for the first phase of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation’s Global Clean Hydrogen Programme.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a low-carbon hydrogen economy relies on hydrogen gas produced from water using renewable energy or natural gas with trapped emissions.
This new energy infrastructure generates zero pollution when used, making it a critical tool for industries worldwide to eliminate harmful factory smoke.
NAN reports that the programme is supported under the EU-Nigeria Energy Diplomacy Support Project, alongside the German-Nigeria Hydrogen Office.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
