The Commander, Guards Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Adebisi Onasanya, has charged young soldiers to sustain vigilance, discipline and professionalism after completing Exercise Shining Star.
Onasanya gave the charge on Friday at the closing of the field training exercise at the 176 Guards Battalion Forward Operating Base, Kwali.
This is contained in a statement by Lt. Odunola Olawuyi, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, on Friday in Abuja.
He said the exercise was designed to sharpen the tactical proficiency, combat readiness and operational effectiveness of soldiers of the 90 Regular Recruits Intake.
The commander said the exercise exposed the soldiers to fighting and clearance patrols, raids, roadblocks, ambushes, cordon and search operations.
He said the training also enhanced battlefield coordination and provided practical experience required for effective military operations.
Onasanya stressed the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling contemporary security challenges, noting that the exercise involved the Police, NSCDC and Vigilante Group of Nigeria.
He said effective intelligence sharing, coordination and interoperability remained critical to successful joint operations.
The commander said troops, working with other security agencies, conducted patrols and clearance operations in communities and hinterland areas during the exercise.
He said the operations disrupted criminal activities, denied criminal elements freedom of action and led to the arrest of several suspected illegal miners.
Onasanya said equipment used for illegal mining was also seized, demonstrating the resolve of the security agencies to protect national resources and support lawful economic activities.
He described the exercise as a demonstration of the Brigade’s commitment to continuous training, professional development and operational readiness.
The commander reminded the young soldiers that their development as military professionals was a lifelong process requiring continuous learning, discipline and dedication.
He urged them to sustain the knowledge, skills and professional relationships acquired during the exercise and continue striving for excellence.
Onasanya also reiterated the Brigade’s commitment to its motto, “Vigilance and Sacrifice,” while stressing safety, discipline and professionalism in all military operations.
He expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for his support for training and operational activities.
He also commended participating security agencies for their cooperation and commitment toward creating a safer Federal Capital Territory and its environs.
The exercise commenced with its tactical phase on Sept. 14 at the General O.A. Azazi Parade Ground, Gwagwalada, and ended on Sept. 18.
Onasanya subsequently declared Exercise Shining Star formally closed, in line with Army Headquarters training directives. (NAN)
