Mr Hammed Aroyewun, Chairman, Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), has called on residents to join hands in combating drug abuse.
Aroyewun made the call in a statement on Thursday, describing drug abuse as a major threat to the future of young people and the security of society.
He urged parents, schools, religious organisations and community leaders to intensify efforts to educate youths on the dangers of substance abuse.
According to him, drug abuse is not only a public health concern, but also a driver of insecurity, violence and other criminal activities within communities.
“Drug abuse is everybody’s concern. As we continue to build a safer, healthier and more prosperous Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA, we must collectively reject every form of drug abuse in our communities.
“The misuse of drugs destroys lives, jeopardises the future of our youths and contributes to insecurity, violence and criminal activities. We cannot afford to fold our arms while this menace threatens the future of our society,” he said.
The chairman described young people as the community’s greatest asset, stressing the need to provide them with the guidance, support and enabling environment required to realise their full potential.
“Our young people are our greatest assets. We owe them the responsibility of providing the right guidance, support and environment that will enable them to thrive and become responsible leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
Aroyewun urged parents, guardians, religious institutions, schools and other stakeholders to collaborate in raising awareness on the dangers of drug abuse.
According to him, only collective action can build a drug-free society where peace, productivity and sustainable development can flourish.
He also called on residents to support initiatives promoting healthy lifestyles and protecting the future of the younger generation. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
