The Indian High Commission in Nigeria, in collaboration with Skipper Eye-Q Eye Hospital, on Tuesday in Abuja, provided free eye screening services to Nigerian journalists.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the outreach was organised to promote the health and well-being of journalists in the execution of their professional duties, particularly those requiring clear eyesight.

Amb. Abhishek Singh, the High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, said the initiative was designed to support journalists through preventive eye care and medical guidance.

“This free eye camp provides journalists with an opportunity to undergo eye examinations and receive professional medical advice,” he said.

Singh added that good eyesight remained essential for media professionals who play a critical role in society.

“Healthy eyesight is vital for media personnel who serve as the eyes and ears of society,” he said.

He also noted that the media is a key pillar of democratic governance, noting its role in accountability and public enlightenment.

“The media is indeed the fourth wheel of democracy, alongside the executive, legislature, and judiciary, which provide checks and balances,” he said.

Singh stressed that consistent engagement with the media remained an important aspect of India’s diplomatic presence in Nigeria.

He assured continued support for initiatives aimed at strengthening media welfare and cooperation between both countries.

“I look forward to continued media interactions on issues of mutual importance to both countries. Long live India-Nigeria partnership,” he added.

Responding, DICAN Chairman, Mr Fredrick Idehai, commended the Indian High Commission for its swift response and commitment to the welfare of journalists.

He said that the initiative as a landmark intervention for media practitioners working under demanding conditions.

“This gesture demonstrates genuine concern for the well-being of journalists who spend long hours in the field and newsroom,” Idehai said.

He also praised the strengthening of India-Nigeria relations through practical cooperation in health and professional development.

Furthermore, Idehai disclosed that discussions were ongoing on exchange programmes that would enable selected DICAN members to travel to India in batches for capacity building and professional exposure. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
