The Director-General of Kaduna International Film Festival (KADIFF), Mr Israel Audu, has mourned veteran Nollywood actor, Diewait Ikpechukwu, describing his death as a loss to the Nigerian film industry.

Audu, in a condolence message on Saturday in Kaduna, said Ikpechukwu contributed to the growth of the creative industry through his acting career and mentorship of younger talents.

“Diewait Ikpechukwu was more than an actor; he was a committed professional whose experience, passion and contributions helped shape the Nigerian film industry.

“His passing is a painful loss, particularly to those of us who recognise the importance of preserving and celebrating the contributions of our creative pioneers,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ikpechukwu was born on Aug. 23, 1955, and died on Nov. 5, aged 71, after a prolonged illness.

His death was announced on Nov. 6 by the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi-Yakubu, in an Instagram tribute.

Ikpechukwu had more than 25 years of acting experience and featured in several Nollywood productions, including Evil Men (1998), Royal Palace (2005), The Guilty (2006), Across the River (2006), Python King (2007) and Ìjé Love (2022).

Before venturing into acting, he was a footballer and sports commentator. He also worked with the defunct Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL).

He studied Marketing at Kaduna Polytechnic, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma, and later completed his National Youth Service Corps programme at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Ikpechukwu also served as chairman of the AGN Enugu State chapter, where he mentored and encouraged upcoming actors.

Audu said the late actor’s career across different fields reflected versatility, commitment and service.

“His experience and contributions will remain part of the history of Nollywood, while his legacy should inspire younger generations of filmmakers and actors,” he said.

He said KADIFF believed that the contributions of individuals who helped build the creative industry should not be forgotten.

Audu extended condolences to the deceased’s family, the AGN and the Nollywood community, while praying for strength and comfort for his friends, fans and professional associates. (NAN)
