Kano State has increased its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refilling stations to 12 from virtually zero within one year, following the commissioning of two stations and a vehicle conversion centre by NU Synergy.
Mr Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman, Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), spoke at the commissioning of the facilities in Kano.
Ahmed, in a statement, issue on Sunday by Onyekachi Eke, Head, Brand and Communications, Pi-CNG & EV, said the development reflected growing private-sector investment in Nigeria’s clean mobility sector.
He said the expansion of CNG infrastructure would improve access to affordable alternative fuel and support efforts to reduce transportation costs.
“The future belongs to cheaper energy sources for transportation. It is difficult to achieve that with PMS and diesel.
“Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources presents opportunities to reduce transport costs, attract investment, create jobs and develop technical skills.
“Nigeria is a gas country, not an oil country. We have over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas,” he said.
The Pi-CNG chairman recalled that the promoter of NU Synergy approached the initiative about four months ago to explore investment opportunities in the CNG sector.
He said the investor was connected with the initiative’s operations and gas teams for guidance and technical support.
“Four months later, this is the story. He is commissioning a CNG station in Kano,” Ahmed said.
He disclosed that NU Synergy had established two facilities in the state, one along Zaria Road and another in Mariri along Wudil Road, with plans to expand to other locations.
Ahmed commended the investor for the speed of execution, describing the facilities as an example of the private-sector commitment needed to accelerate CNG adoption nationwide.
“You are a doer, you are a deliverer, and you have delivered in Kano,” he said.
He said expanding refilling infrastructure was critical to addressing access challenges facing CNG users and making gas-powered transportation more convenient for motorists and commercial transport operators.
The newly commissioned facilities combine CNG refuelling services with vehicle conversion, enabling motorists to access both services within the same location.
The development is also expected to support the objectives of the Northern Corridor activation, which seeks to expand CNG infrastructure, vehicle conversions and clean mobility investments across northern Nigeria. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
