Kenya targets 3,000-tonne annual bixa production

Kenya says it is targeting an increase in its annual bixa production capacity to at least 3,000 tonnes.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the initiative during a visit to Kwale County, TV BRICS, a NAN partner, reported on Wednesday.

The initiative is expected to expand bixa cultivation and create new opportunities for farmers in the coastal region.

The programme will focus on increasing the number of growers, distributing certified seedlings and strengthening agricultural extension services.

Currently, about 10,000 farmers in Kwale, Kilifi and Lamu counties are engaged in bixa production.

The government plans to increase the number of farmers through wider distribution of certified planting materials.

Kagwe said annual bixa production currently stood between 1,000 and 1,400 tonnes, indicating significant potential for growth.

He said the initiative was also expected to strengthen value addition and exports while creating employment opportunities across the coastal region.

The processing sector currently provides about 150 direct jobs, with additional employment generated through farming, transportation and supply chains.

The government expects the 3,000-tonne production target to further expand these economic opportunities.
