The ad-hoc committee recently set up by the Ijaw National Congress (INC) to resolve lingering disputes among ex-agitators, businessmen and politicians of the Ijaw tribe has urged aggrieved parties to remain calm.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos, the committee, constituted about two weeks ago, said it would handle all matters within its jurisdiction in the best interest of the Ijaw people.

The statement was signed by its Chairman, AIG Okoro Julius Alawari (rtd) and Secretary, Prof. Juliet Teibowei.

The committee assured that all differences would be resolved amicably, calling for cooperation and support from stakeholders.

โ€œWe seek the cooperation and support of the general public to succeed in this service,โ€ it said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INC, led by Prof. Benjamin Okaba, had announced the constitution of the ad-hoc committee in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha.

The organisation said the committee was aimed at promoting peace and unity among the Ijaw people.

โ€œWorried by the increasing spate of disagreement among some prominent Ijaw ex-agitators, businessmen and politicians, the president has directed me to announce the constitution of a seven-man ad-hoc mediation committee.

โ€œThe terms of reference shall include reaching out to all aggrieved parties with a view to resolving their differences amicably.

โ€œWith this development, rather than resort to abusing, pulling down and/or castigating a fellow Ijaw son or daughter, we should direct or channel grievances to this committee,โ€ Oyakemeagbegha had said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
