The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved five new academic programmes for Veritas University, Abuja.

The university’s Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications, Mr Ben Agande, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.

Agande said the newly approved programmes were B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Cyber Security, B.Sc. Information Systems, B.Sc. Data Science and B.A. Theatre Arts.

He said the approval increased the number of departments in the university to 43, spread across 12 faculties and a College of Medicine.

According to him, the institution currently offers programmes in Law, Medicine and Surgery, Software Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Electrical and Electronics Engineering, among others.

Agande said the new programmes were introduced to address identified gaps and equip students with skills required to meet emerging global challenges.

Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Hyacinth Ichoku, said the programmes would strengthen the institution’s computing and technology-based offerings.

“The new programmes will integrate advanced computational thinking, human-centred design and robust data analysis to prepare our students for dynamic careers in an evolving digital landscape.

“They will also consolidate the university’s robust computing programmes, which have received national and international recognition,” he said.

Ichoku said students must be exposed early to relevant skills and knowledge to remain competitive in an increasingly complex world.

“As Artificial Intelligence and Data Science continue to shape many aspects of human life, we cannot afford to lag behind.

“We want our students to acquire the expertise needed to safeguard institutional and national data, while also becoming leaders in high-demand fields and emerging technologies.

“This expansion aligns with our broader goal of leveraging technology to advance teaching, research and community service,” he said.

The vice-chancellor urged prospective students interested in the new programmes and other courses offered by the university to visit the institution’s admission portal https://www.admission.veritas.edu.ng for further information.‎(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
