The Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security has pledged to support the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCC) through legislation, to deliver on its mandate.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr Shuiab Salisu, made the pledge on Wednesday in Abuja when he led members of the committee on an oversight visit to the centre.

Salisu said the visit was in line with the mandate of the committee to see how technology could be used to address the country’s pressing challenges.

According to him, security is one of the major challenges the country is currently facing and as members of the committee we thought it was right to start with the NPF-NCC.

“Today, cybercrime is on the increase and as a committee, we are here to see the facilities on ground at the centre and the challenges militating its operations.

“The idea is to ensure that they deliver on their mandate of addressing the increasing rate of cybercrimes effectively.

“Cybercrime is technology based and it damages the economy and individuals,” he said.

Salisu expressed satisfaction with the facilities on ground at the centre, adding that funds were needed to enhance the operational requirement of the centre.

“They also need some empowerment to address the issues of kidnapping in the country.

“With modern technology they could track all technology devices, including the phones used by criminals.

“No crime can be committed today without the use of technology and what this means is that we need technology to combat the crimes,” he said.

He said the committee would also visit other agencies saddled with the responsibilities to fight cybercrime with a view to promoting synergy among them.

In his remarks, the Director and Commissioner of Police in charge of the NPF-NCC, Mr Uche Ifeanyi, commended the committee members for the visit.

He said the visit had created an avenue for the legislators to see the strength and the weakness of the centre to be able to support it through adequate budgetary allocation.

Ifeanyi said the fight against cybercrime could only be won with adequate funding, adding that the centre currently had one of the best technology that requires renewal and subscription.

“The renewals, subscriptions and licensing of the technologies run into millions of dollars that the Nigeria Police cannot do alone.”

We need the right budgetary allocation; we need the support of the legislators and the government to enhance our service delivery,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The FCT Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA-FCT) has resolved to develop and publish a guideline to support security agencies in the event of kidnap of any medical doctor in the FCT.

The Chairman of NMA-FCT, Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, said this on Wednesday, at a news conference in Abuja.

Ugwuanyi said, “NMA-FCT, as a matter of urgency, has resolved to develop and publish a guideline to have as a working document in the event of kidnap of any medical doctor in the FCT.

“The document will include informing the appropriate security agencies and thereafter downing tool after 24 hours if no satisfactory actions or noticeable progress by the security agencies.”

He said that this became necessary following the kidnapping of a member of the association along Airport Road in Abuja, Dr Chammah McSampson, a dental surgeon with Smile Dental Clinic.

He recalled that McSampson was kidnapped on March 10, and was released on March 14 after paying ransom.

Ugwuanyi said that NMA-FCT noted with deep concern during its congress on March 16 that the security situation in the FCT had posed an existential threat to the safety of its members.

He said that the congress also decried the delay by the FCT Minister in meeting with his leadership especially during this difficult period despite several attempts.

According to him, NMA-FCT congress has highlighted the necessary involvement of private individuals, professional associations, religious organisations, and others in assisting security agencies to curb the menace of insecurity in the FCT and Nigeria in general.

The NMA-FCT boss said that the association’s Emergency General Meeting (EGM) urged its members to be more security conscious by adopting measures that would make them less targeted by kidnappers and other criminals.

According to him, members have been advised not to go home late at night, as well as change the way they store other medical doctors’ names on their phones to avoid unnecessary attention.

Ugwuanyi also appealed to the Federal Capital Territory Administration Hospital Management Board (FCTA-HMB) to consider how far the doctors stay from the hospital, saying such consideration would prevent security risk.

He said that NMA-FCT would liaise with other professional bodies and associations to draw attention to the state of the insecurity challenges currently bedevilling the FCT as well as finding solutions to them.

Ugwuanyi said that NMA-FCT would also be visiting the Director-General of Department of State Security (DSS) and other security agencies to register its displeasure. (NAN)

In a bid to strengthen its ties with Nigeria, the U.S. government says it will be launching different initiatives to empower writers, TV producers, actors, music artistes and Nigerian students.

Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, said this during an interview session at the American Corner located at Vibranium Valley Tech City, Ikeja, on Wednesday evening.

She said that creating empowerment opportunities would help bridge the gap between the Hollywood and Nollywood, music industry, among others by sharing resources.

According to her, the U.S. wants TV producers to come to the United States to be mentored by American writers and producers at the University of Southern California (USC) Cinematic Art.

Satterfield said the initiative which was an amazing programme, would produce incredible talents.

She added that the U.S. would also be granting writers from Nigeria the opportunity to come and collaborate with American writers to help establish television shows.

Satterfield said this would be done by seeing them through production and different phases of creative process.

On music, the U.S. official said: “We will be partnering with brands to bring African music industry professionals to Los Angeles to be mentored by recording academy members, so that they can basically network.

“We are also launching a community college initiative to bring Nigerians to the United States to study.

“Providing economic opportunities and access to education is critically important, it is both the right and smart thing to do,” Satterfield said.

On investing in women, she said that not including them in businesses was like leaving out half of the world’s population.

According to Satterfield, providing women access to opportunities is not only good for individuals, but communities and families.

She said that currently, the U.S. was running different programmes to empower women.

Satterfield said that one of the programmes was Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, a training course developed at Arizona State University.

According to her, women entrepreneurs go through training and administer it globally by building a community of women who are interested in starting a business.

She added that Nigerians particularly had the spirit of entrepreneurship.

In terms of protecting Nigerian Cultural antiques, Satterfield said the U.S. had invested over $1.3 million over the past decade in digitising museums, so that there would be a record.

She added that this was also done to stop the illicit trafficking of cultural antiques that was happening all over the world.

Satterfield said that the U.S. and Nigerian recently signed a bilateral cultural property agreement again, to preserve the nations art collections from smugglers. (NAN)

The Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN) has urged private surveyors to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their finances effectively.

APPSN, a sub-group of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Lagos State Branch, gave the advice at its 2024 Annual General Meeting and luncheon, on Wednesday, in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting has the theme: “Sustainable Financial Solutions and Understanding Financial Literacy as a Private Practitioner”.

The programme aims to empower private surveyors with the financial knowledge and literacy they need to run their practices more profitably and ensure their long-term financial well-being.

The Chairman, APPSN, Mr Ibironke Adaranijo, noted that financial knowledge was a must-have skill for private surveyors in today’s world.

Adaranijo said financial knowledge would enable surveyors to excel in their business at the long run.

“In a world where financial stability is paramount for success, our theme underscores the critical importance of equipping ourselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of financial management effectively.

“As private practitioners in the field of surveying, understanding financial literacy is not just advantageous, it is indispensable for sustainable growth and prosperity,” he said.

The Guest Speaker, Mr Omoniyi Shiwoku, the Managing Director, Pecuniary Professionals and Variant Pecuniary Consulting, who noted that the theme of the event was apt, said it fits the situation currently facing the country.

Shiwoku advised the professionals to set a solid foundation for themselves by being financially literate, saying the major reason businesses failed was lack of planning.

He emphasised the need for them to be financially literate, adding that it would provide surveyors with a framework to understand the “why” and “how” of money management.

This, he said, would equip them to make sound financial decisions that would contribute to their business’s stability and growth.

He said: “Financial literacy allows surveyors to analyse their income and expenses, understand financial products and services, and make informed choices about saving, investing, and borrowing.

“They can assess risks and potential returns before committing to financial decisions that could impact their business’s success.”

Mr George Olawande, Member, Representing Amuwo-Odofin Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, advised the organisers to always invite experts with the requisite knowledge about financial literacy in their midst to do justice to the topic.

He said that the knowledge which the expert would share would help private surveyors to avoid making risky financial choices that could hurt their business.

This, he said, would help them to weigh the pros and cons before borrowing money, investing, or spending.

U.S. envoy advocates enabling environment, access to capital for young start-ups

U.S. envoy advocates enabling environment, access to capital for young start-ups

Michael Ervin, Senior Foreign Service Officer, United States Consulate, Lagos, says access to capital for young companies and an enabling environment for technology start-ups will enable new perspectives to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

Ervin made the call at the American Business Council (ABC) Economic Update on Tuesday in Lagos with theme; “Navigating the Start-up Landscape in Nigeria amidst Economic Challenges”.

He described start-ups as the lifeblood of any thriving economy and pioneers that carve new paths into uncharted markets.

He added that these set of businesses were the engine of job creation and the launch pad for the next generation of groundbreaking technologies.

Ervin noted that while start-ups might be small at first, their growth potential was tremendous, particularly as they hired local talent, injecting a surge of energy and opportunity into the Nigerian communities.

“So, what more can we do? How do we continuously leverage this vital force for social well-being and economic development?

“We need an environment that fosters risk-taking. We need access to capital for these young companies. We need to celebrate not just the successes, but the journey itself, the audacious spirit that dares us to dream big,” he said.

Ervin stated that in view of the above, the U.S. mission and ABC in 2023, launched an associate membership category for U.S. incorporated startups, admitting them into a community of established global businesses where opportunities could be expanded.

He noted that in 2023, the technology sector contributed over 17 per cent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), almost doubling the revenues from oil and gas.

According to him, U.S. venture capital firms have invested heavily in African tech startups, with over 60 and 40 per cent of venture capital funding in Nigeria and Africa, respectively, coming from the United States.

This, he said, meant that technology was a driving force, a fundamental force of Nigeria’s prosperity.

He urged all start-ups registered in the United States to join the American Business Council and leverage the opportunities that exist therein.

Ervin affirmed that the United States had been committed to fostering collaboration with Nigeria across the sectors of agriculture, education, healthcare, power, technology, and other vital areas for development and economic growth.

“Up to 60 per cent of African start-ups are incorporated in the United States, and this figure jumps to 80 per cent when considering Nigeria alone.

“In 2022, African start-ups raised 4.6 billion dollars, translating to an average of over one million dollars every two hours.

“In spite of the global downturn in Venture Capital funding last year in 2023, the United States still accounted for about 40 per cent of the nearly three billion dolars raised by African star-tups last year.

“These numbers indicate that we have a strong interest in supporting the growth of not just the start-up ecosystem, but the digital economy of Nigeria, of Africa, and clearly Nigeria is a key market in that equation,” he said.

Mrs Magaret Olele, Chief Executive Officer, ABC, noted that they were various opportunities for economic growth through the start-up space.

She said the council was committed to recognising and identifying these start-ups, understanding their challenges, point them to opportunities and show them the agencies to go, to help them upscale.

“We are training them to build more employability with banks and other spaces, thereby closing the gap in terms of employment and having exportable talents.

“We are also committed to building parameters that would engender female inclusion in the start-up ecosystem to foster gender equality and equity in the technology space,” she said.

Mrs Folashade Ambrose Mebedem, Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Lagos State, noted that the state boasted of quite a number of unicorns that had been birthed in it.

The commissioner said the state continued to provide support to a number of start-ups, particularly given the current challenging economic situation.

According to her, the Governor of Lagos, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has disbursed about N500 million to start-ups and continues to engage with them to identify their areas of needs and investments.

“Under the THEMES Plus agenda, the Lagos State government is committed to driving economic prosperity and growth by strengthening the organised private sector, alongside women and youth owned businesses.

“We would continue to identify formidable partners to work with, to drive women inclusion and achieve great successes in the start-up space,” she said.

Mrs Omoboye Odu, Head, Global Corporate Division, Ecobank, said the Nigerian entrepreneurial spirit was undeniable as brilliant minds came together on a daily basis to form ideas that shape the future of the country.

Odu noted that the dynamic environment had the potential to be engines of the future which required more than just a brilliant idea.

“This is where institutions like Ecobank steps in, in recognising the transformative power of start-ups.

“Our renowned partnership offers loans, advisory services for business and job creation across the continent and we remain committed to providing crucial financial and advisory support,” she said.

Mrs Yemi Keri, Founder, Rising Tide Africa, an Angel Network with Investment Pieces, said the firm had invested $1.98 million in about 35 start-ups.

She, however, noted that Nigeria was still at the surface, in terms of technology, stating that there existed massive opportunities not just for traditional but for emerging technologies.

“In terms of the Start-up Act, the implementation is where we are at now and some of the policies in the Act have not really identified and looked at the gender lens in the way we expected it to.

“Government needs to improve on the ease of doing business, while we encourage more women to become angel investors and hand-hold many female start-ups founders and guide them in the ecosystem,” she said.

Mr Yakubu Musa, Acting National Coordinator, office for Nigerian Digital Innovation, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), said over 12000 start-ups have registered under the National Start-up Act.

Musa added that there were also over 1,000 angel investors and the next phase under the Act was to create profiles, verify stakeholders and engage several state governments to domesticate the Act. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nigeria Health Watch, a non-profit organisation, has extended its partnership deal with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), to promote Solutions Journalism in the country.

NAN reports that the deal between it and the Nigeria Health Watch which uses informed advocacy and communication to seek better health and access to healthcare in Nigeria, will last between February and December 2024.

NAN also reports that solutions journalism is a rigorous reporting about responses to society’s problems, especially about health.

Mr Ali Muhammad Ali, the Managing Director of NAN, who spoke during the signing ceremony on Wednesday in his office in Abuja, expressed gratitude to the organisation for the impactful contributions to the agency since the beginning of the partnership.

“Solutions journalism is complete journalism that not only spotlights the problems but follows an evidence-based presentation of existing solutions.

“Such reporting enhances knowledge and accountability by providing the whole story to readers and offers constructive content in an age of media apathy.

“We value the hope you’ve instilled, and given our commitment to solution journalism and development journalism here at NAN, factual accuracy is not just a luxury but a necessity by law.

“We must remain truthful and objective in our reporting. Solution journalism, as you rightly noted, brings hope to our nation,” Ali said.

The managing director also said that the agency shared a common passion and vision with the organisaion since solutions journalism proffered solutions to challenges.

Earlier, Mrs Vivianne Ihekweazu, Managing Director, Nigeria Health Watch, noted that NAN was among the first organisations to establish a Solutions Journalism desk in its office.

This, she said demonstrated that NAN was committed to the programme and initiative.

Ihekweazu said that solutions journalism aimed to not only report problems but also highlight potential solutions.

“This approach is crucial as it inspires hope, encourages action and emphasises collective responsibility in addressing societal issues.

“Through solutions journalism, NAN seeks to inspire Nigerians by showcasing solutions to the myriad of challenges faced in Nigeria.

“This serves as a powerful tool for driving positive change and fostering a sense of empowerment within the community,” she said.

NAN had in 2022, established a dedicated solutions journalism desk in the agency that focuses on reports that addressed various social challenges across the country.

Journalists received support, training and mentorship from the Nigeria Health Watch team to investigate and report responses to various social challenges across the country.

The stories they produced were published on the platforms of the various newsrooms through Solutions Journalism Africa Initiative.

Some of the published stories were featured on the Solutions Journalism Network’s Solutions Story Tracker, an international database that curates solutions journalism stories published all over the world. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Degree certificate accreditation suspension: PR consultant wants FG to reconsider stand

Degree certificate accreditation suspension: PR consultant wants FG to reconsider stand

A public relations consultant, Mr Aschor Babalola, on Wednesday appealed to the Federal Government to reconsider suspension of accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.

Babalola made the appeal in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

Babalola condemned the alleged certificate racketeering, describing it as disturbing and detestable, but urged the federal government to end the suspension in the interest of genuine students.

”I am appealing to the government to kindly reconsider its stand on the matter in the interest of genuine Nigerian students, especially newly-graduated students whose future remains in the balance as a result of this pronouncement.

“We cannot for the sake of few bad eggs disrupt the future of other Nigerian citizens, nor should we deprive or restrict the freedom of choice of an average Nigerian student willing to genuinely study anywhere across the globe.

“This development has stalled the progress of more than 15,000 Nigerian students, who have genuinely got their bachelor’s  degree in these neighbouring countries, either by reasons of affordable scholarship opportunities or a mere adventure to experience learning in a different clime,” Babalola, also a philanthropist and owner of OptimEyes Media, said.

Recall that the federal government had, through the Federal Ministry of Education, announced suspension of accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo with effect from Jan. 2.

It regretted that some Nigerians deployed nefarious means to get degrees with the end objective of getting graduate job opportunities for which they were not qualified.

The suspension came against the backdrop of an investigative report by a national daily entitled: “How Daily Nigerian Reporter Bagged Cotonou Varsity Degree in Six Weeks”.

According to the government, the suspension persists pending the outcome of an investigation involving the ministries of foreign affairs and education of Nigeria and the two countries, as well as the Department of State Security Service and the National Youths Service Corps.

Babalola, however, praised the federal government for efforts to clamp down on certificate racketeering.

“I must commend the efforts of the Nigerian Government, through the Ministry of Education, under the leadership of the Minister, Prof. Tahir Mamman, for swift and decisive actions in a bid to clamp down on the irregularities.

“There is no denying the fact that this condemnable practice poses a threat to the fabric of our dear nation, Nigeria, and the Nigerian Government must ensure all those found wanting are made to face the full wrath of the law.

“I sincerely hope the committee set up to investigate this ugly development has concluded its task, considering the fact that the two-month ultimatum given to them by the minister has elapsed and concerned Nigerians are anxiously waiting for a considerable outcome,” he said. (NAN)
