The Federal Fire Service (FFS) FCT Command has advised residents to desist from walking or driving through floodwaters as rainfall intensifies.
The FFS FCT command Public Relations Officer (PRO), Barnabas Anyam, warned that the temptation to hurriedly cross floods posed great risks to live.
Anyam noted that even shallow water on roads could pose serious danger to lives and property.
“Residents caught in floods are advised to remain calm and move immediately to higher ground,” he advised.
The spokesperson advised residents to keep children away from floodwaters and open culverts as well as to move valuables, important documents, food supplies and other essential items to higher levels in due time.
He also warned against living electrical appliances on in homes during rainfalls, stressing that all sockets should be switched off.
He further said that evacuation of children, elderly persons and persons with disabilities should be prioritised during household floods, and urged residents to avoid drinking or using potentially contaminated floodwater.
Anyam reaffirmed the command’s commitment to responding swiftly to emergencies and safeguarding lives and property across the territory.
He quoted the command’s Controller, Muhammed Anas, as appealing to residents to cooperate with emergency responders, obey safety instructions and promptly report flood incidents and other emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
Anas urged residents to call the FFS FCT emergency contact number – 0803 200 3557 in case of emergencies.(NAN)
