A Nigerian community leader in South Africa has urged the Federal Government to engage Pretoria ahead of a June 30 deadline announced by anti-immigration groups.
Ekos Akpokabayen, Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), made the call in a statement.
Akpokabayen expressed concern that developments surrounding the deadline could heighten tensions and threaten the safety of foreign nationals residing in South Africa.
He clarified that the June 30 date was not set by the South African government.
According to him, the deadline was announced by anti-foreign immigration groups demanding that undocumented migrants leave the country.
He urged the Nigerian government to proactively engage South African authorities and relevant stakeholders on the matter.
“I urge the Nigerian government to take proactive measures by engaging the South African government and relevant authorities,” he said.
Akpokabayen warned that tensions linked to the deadline could escalate into violence against both documented and undocumented foreign nationals.
According to him, criminal elements could exploit any unrest to attack or loot businesses owned by foreigners.
He also advised the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to closely monitor developments and sustain engagement with community leaders.
The NUSA leader said regular consultations would help keep Nigerians informed of developments and measures aimed at safeguarding their welfare.
He urged Nigerians living in South Africa to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding during the period.
Akpokabayen expressed confidence that proactive engagement by both governments would help manage potential tensions and protect residents.
“I believe any tensions associated with the June 30 deadline can be effectively managed through timely intervention,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
