A former House of Representatives member, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, has intensified his push for the Edo South senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During a strategic visit to the Edo South senatorial leaders on Saturday in Benin, Ogbeide-Ihama said his experience made him the strongest candidate ahead of the party’s primaries
The aspirant who formally intimated the party leaders of his intention to contest, and sought their support, argued that experience and capacity should guide the party’s choice of candidate.
“The Senate is not a place for trial and error.
“All aspirants are qualified, but having served two terms in the House of Representatives, I believe I am the most prepared and experienced to take on this responsibility,” he said.
The former lawmaker, who represented Oredo Federal Constituency from 2015 to 2023, stressed that his legislative background gave him an edge over other contenders.
He warned against handing the ticket to “someone who wants to learn on the job.”
Addressing speculations about alleged political consultations, including claims that he had reached out to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Ogbeide-Ihama did not deny seeking support.
“If meeting people can strengthen my chances, there is nothing wrong with that. Everyone needs support in politics,” he said.
He also recalled his political resilience during his previous elections under the Peoples Democratic Party, noting that despite facing setbacks, such as the removal of his campaign billboards, he still secured victory.
“Now that I am in the APC, I believe the path will be smoother because I am among my own,” he added.
Positioning himself as part of a new generation of leaders, Ogbeide-Ihama argued that the evolving political landscape favours younger, energetic candidates capable of driving development across the seven local government areas of Edo South.
“As a youth, I have the strength and energy to represent our people effectively and push their interests at the national level,” he said.
He highlighted his record in office, including the provision of street lighting and empowerment initiatives, as evidence of his capacity to deliver.
“I have presented myself to the leaders, sought their support and prayers, and I am now taking my message to the grassroots across the local governments,” he said.
Responding, Edo South APC leader and former deputy governor, Pius Odubu, urged the aspirant to conduct his campaign peacefully, describing the contest as an internal party affair.
“This is a family process. Many may aspire, but only one person will emerge. Let it be done in peace,” Odubu said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
