The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has seized 2,248.9 kilogrammes of assorted illicit drugs in Bauchi State in the last seven months.

The agency also apprehended 270 suspects and destroyed a marijuana plantation within the period under review.

Mr Hassan Yaqub, the State Commander of Narcotics, stated this at an event to mark the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The theme of the day is: “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”

Yaqub said the seized drugs, weighing over two tonnes, included cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, rohypnol, crack cocaine, tramadol, codeine syrup, among others.

He said the agency destroyed a cannabis plantation and arrested one suspect at a farm in Bogoro Local Government Area of the state.

The commander said the agency had filed 105 new cases in court, secured 79 convictions, and had 74 cases awaiting trial, with 12 suspects in detention.

Yaqub said the agency treated and discharged 67 persons with drug dependence, while 12 others were currently receiving treatment at its rehabilitation centre.

“The care, treatment, and rehabilitation unit is doing its best to reshape the lives of persons with drug dependence, to reintegrate them into society as responsible and accepted members,” he said.

On public enlightenment, Yaqub said the agency had conducted over 300 community outreaches, reaching 1.5 million people, to educate them on the dangers of drug abuse under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA).

He said the sensitisation campaigns were carried out between November 2025 and June 2026, at places of worship, motor parks, and schools.

According to Yaqub, the agency is working with the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, APCN, the NYSC Drug Free Club, and other organisations to curb the menace in the state.

Yaqub urged tertiary institutions and other schools to establish drug-free clubs to strengthen campaigns against drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the state.

While commending the Bauchi State Government, community and religious leaders, and other organisations for their support, Yaqub reiterated the agency’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the state. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
