China’s experience in digital infrastructure, e-commerce and digital skills development can support the digital transformation and economic growth of BRICS countries, an expert has said.
Xie Hongjun, a researcher at the BRICS Research Centre of the University of International Business and Economics, China, as reported by NAN through its partner, TV BRICS.
He said China could contribute to BRICS’ digital transformation in three key areas: digital infrastructure, e-commerce platforms and innovation coordination.
According to him, China has recorded remarkable progress in digital infrastructure over the past decade through investments in 5G networks, cloud computing and data centres.
Xie said the country now has more than five million 5G base stations, making its 5G network the largest in the world.
He identified digital skills development as another area in which China could strengthen cooperation with other BRICS members.
The researcher said China had expanded higher education programmes in digital disciplines, promoted stronger collaboration between universities and industry, and established lifelong learning systems to retrain professionals.
He added that China currently has more than 300 million digitally skilled workers, with demand for such professionals continuing to rise.
According to Xie, China has two major lessons to share with BRICS countries.
“The first is Future digital talent should understand technology, economics, management and international rules at the same time.
“The second is inclusive access. Digital education should not only serve people in major cities or top institutions. It should reach everyone,” he said.
Speaking on the priority for accelerating digitalisation across BRICS economies, Xie identified digital infrastructure and cyber security as critical.
He explained that, without a strong foundation and user trust, it is impossible to develop artificial intelligence, big data and digital trade.
Xie said these are areas that serve as the basis for everything else. (TV BRICS/NAN)
