Egypt President Al-Sisi reiterates support for El-Enany’s UNESCO D-G candidacy

By Nana Musa
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt says support for the Egyptian candidate for UNESCO, Khaled El-Enany, will maintain African unity and solidarity in the comity of nations.

In a letter by Mohamed Fouad, Egyptian ambassador on Monday in Abuja, Al-Sisi said that the move carries strong diplomatic weight, coming just weeks before the election of UNESCO’s next Director-General.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that El-Enany, Egypt’s former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, first announced his candidacy in April 2023.

It was formally endorsed by the African Union in February 2024—a position that has since been reiterated during successive sessions of the African Union in 2024 and 2025.

No other contender has secured the pan-African backing, making him the sole candidate accepted by the continent as a whole to date.

Al-Sisi said: ‘’That solid foundation quickly opened the door to wider support beyond Africa, underscoring the recognition of a profile able to unite across divides. In an election shaped by delicate diplomatic balances, the Egyptian bid has emerged as a consensus-building option.’’

He added that since launching his campaign, El-Enany has toured more than 60 countries, meeting political leaders, academics, young people, and civil society representatives.

He said that this hands-on diplomacy has shaped a platform closely aligned with member states’ priorities: education as a fundamental right, culture as a bridge between peoples, and science and research as pillars of sustainable development.

Among his concrete proposals are strengthening UNESCO’s presence in Africa, supporting development programmes, and investing in local capacity-building.

‘’A respected Egyptologist, professor since 1993, and former minister managing an administration of 35,000 people, El-Enany brings both academic and political credentials that fit UNESCO’s mission.

‘’His reforms in heritage preservation, museum modernisation, and cultural tourism have earned him international recognition, further reinforcing his standing.

‘’Now backed not only by the African Union but also by the Arab League and a cross-regional coalition of states, his candidacy extends well beyond its continental roots.’’

NAN reports that Al-Sisi’s message confirmed El-Enany’s acceptance as the October 6 vote nears.

El-Enany increasingly appears to be the candidate of global consensus; unifying, forward-looking, and attuned to the future of UNESCO.(NAN)

DEPOWA President charges women on physical exercise

DEPOWA President charges women on physical exercise

By Sumaila Ogbaje

The President, Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Musa, has charged wives of military personnel to remain active and healthy through physical exercise and regular health checks.

Musa made the call at the Fitness Health Walk organised by the Naval Officer’s Wives Association (NOWA), on Saturday in Abuja.

She was represented by the Coordinator, Defence Space Administration Officers Wives Association (DSAOWA), Mrs Rukayat Oluwatoyin.

According to her, small actions, like taking a walk, could have a profound impact on lives as a move toward better mental clarity, stronger hearts, and healthier futures.

“It is not just about the miles, it is about the mindset. It is about making a choice to prioritize our well-being and to continue taking those steps, no matter how small, every single day.

“The momentum we have built today can carry us forward to even greater health achievements. Whether it is continuing to walk, choosing healthier meals, staying active with loved ones, or simply taking time to care for ourselves – every action counts.

“Stay active, stay healthy, and let us keep walking toward a brighter, stronger future,” she said.

The National Vice President of NOWA, Mrs Zainab Akpan, said that walking was one of the simplest yet most powerful forms of physical activity.

According to Akpan, it improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, supports joint health, reduces stress, and boosts mood.

She said that studies had shown that just 30 minutes of brisk walk a day can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type two diabetes, and certain cancers.

Akpan said the walk was not just about physical fitness, but about holistic well-being.

“Let us walk together-not just for ourselves, but for the message we send, but that health is a priority.

“Regular walking supports mental health, improves sleep, and helps manage anxiety and depression.

“Today, we are walking for our health-but also to raise awareness, build community, and promote a culture where movement is part of everyday life,” she said.

Akpan urged the women to always note that a fitness health walk was one of the best ways to stay active without needing special equipment or a gym membership.

A health expert, Dr Uduak Aboh said that physical exercises like walking could help reduce the risk of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, among others.

She also urged women to maintain occupational, emotional and physical wellness through regular checks and exercises. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

In a statement, the AfDB announced that this followed a two-day meeting held at the bank’s headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, by the Steering Committee of the Board of Governors.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the candidates cleared to contest for the top position represent a diverse cross-section of Africa’s leadership and development expertise.

“The Steering Committee, after examining the candidatures, cleared the following list of candidates for the office of the President of the AfDB during the next election to be held on 29 May.

“They include Mr Hott Amadou from Senegal, Dr Maimbo Munzele of Zambia, Mr Tah Ould from Mauritania, Mr Tolli Mahamat of Chad, and Ms Tshabalala Swazi from South Africa,” it said.

Each candidate brings a unique background and vision, setting the stage for what promises to be a competitive election that could shape the future trajectory of the continent’s premier development finance institution.

The upcoming election will determine who succeeds the current president, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, who has led the bank since 2015, steering it through significant reforms and challenging global economic conditions.

The election outcome will have far-reaching implications for Africa’s development agenda, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, economic growth, and climate resilience. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
