The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) has called for improved security, police reform and accountable governance to address Nigeria’s economic and social challenges.

The party’s National Chairman and Leader, Mr Samuel Memeh, made the call at the commencement of its campaigns and presentation of Certificates of Return to candidates for the 2027 general elections on Thursday in Abuja.

Memeh said insecurity, poverty, unemployment, rising living costs and inadequate public services required effective policies and practical solutions.

He said the party would advocate intelligence-driven security operations, modern technology, improved training and equipment for security personnel, better intelligence sharing and accountability in security spending.

He also called for reforms to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force through improved welfare, professional training, modern investigative tools and effective supervision.

Memeh said the DLA supported consideration of constitutionally safeguarded state policing, provided adequate measures were established to prevent political abuse and protect citizens’ rights.

On the economy, he urged the Federal Government to address rising costs, declining purchasing power and poverty, stressing that reforms should improve access to affordable food, employment and better living standards.

He said the party would promote production, manufacturing, modern agriculture, renewable energy, science, technology and innovation to reduce excessive dependence on consumption and imports.

Memeh urged party leaders at all levels to identify policy failures and propose credible alternatives, adding that political engagement should continue beyond election periods.

He urged candidates and members to maintain unity, respect the party’s constitution and conduct peaceful campaigns in line with electoral laws.

He said the Certificates of Return represented responsibility to the electorate rather than personal entitlement.

Earlier, Mr Fortune Aghwaretoma, Chairman of the DLA National Campaign Council, urged candidates to communicate their policies clearly, listen to citizens and campaign with integrity and respect for the democratic process.

Aghwaretoma said the party should present credible alternatives to national challenges and demonstrate its capacity for purposeful leadership.

He also called for stronger coordination, grassroots mobilisation and unity among party members.
